Beijing, the capital of China has an impressive history that spans over three thousand years and is filled with cultural and historical gems from its glamorous past. This doesn’t mean that the city is stuck in its old ways, however, and anybody visiting this location can enjoy the best of both worlds when it comes to attractions from the past and present. From the wonderfully preserved Forbidden City with its ancient wooden structures stemming from the Ming and Qing dynasties, to the sad tale of Tiananmen Square, Beijing is a city filled with rich culture and history unparalleled to most. Of course no trip to the capital is complete without taking the time to visit the world famous Great Wall of China.

Food enthusiasts in Beijing will be delighted with the wide array of options available, with traditional takeaway food mixed with local delicacies that are not always easily available outside the country. With many shops displaying their menus in Chinese, it’s crucial to keep an open mind when making your order. Traditional fast food chains such as KFC and Subway are also available for those with more sensitive stomachs or tastes. There are also numerous shopping opportunities available, with places like the Pearl Market offering a unique glimpse of trading in the city. The Northern Danish city of Aalborg is an important center of commerce; it also features much history. The fourth largest city in Denmark, Aalborg has a population of about 122,000 as of 2009.

Once a mainly industrial city, a lot of the heavy industry has declined, although commerce is still strong and Aalborg remains a bustling city, located on the Limfjord Sound. The old town center by the water is quite picturesque, with 17th century architecture and narrow cobbled streets. Some things you will want to see include the Aalborghus castle and Jens Bang’s 17th century establishment, with some of the most ostentatious 17th century European architecture you’ll ever see.

The museum scene is alive and well in Aalborg, as you should check out the North Jutland Museum of Art, a striking modern building designed by Finnish architect Alvar Alto. Other museums to visit include the Historical Museum and the 17th Century House of Crafts.

The social center of Aalborg is definitely the famous Jomfru Ane Gade (Virgin Anne Street) or simply just Gaden (“The Street”). There you’ll find a fine selection of pubs and restaurants. No visit would be complete without one of their guided tours of great Danish beers. As the day wears on, The Street turns into the nightlife hub of Aalborg.

Aalborg also features a downtown with a variety of unusual and interesting shops along the cobbled streets and courtyards. Other things to check out include the Africa -Aalborg Zoo, the two ancient settlements where you can also see the remains of a Viking burial ground, and if possible, come to Aalborg at the end of May for Carnival week.…
